What to Wear During Ramadan – On the Beach and Off!

We get asked this question all the time by our non-resident customers, as well as many friends and family who visit us during this time of year. So we’re going to tell you what we tell them!

Ramadan is a very important and special time of year for Muslims, and it is equally important for non-Muslims to appreciate the customs observed during this time. This blog post explains how to strike a balance between style and respect for local customs, covering the general do’s and don’ts when visiting Dubai during Ramadan.

Beachside Fashion – Keep It Chic and Respectful

Planning to spend some time by our beautiful, crystal-clear waters? You can still embrace beach fashion while being mindful of modesty.

  • Swimwear choices: One-piece swimsuits or classy high-waisted bikinis.
  • Cover-ups & kaftans: Lightweight, easy to pack, and breathable in the heat! Also convenient for layering over swimwear when transitioning from the pool or beach through public areas—like a hotel lobby or back to your car.
  • Accessories: Pair your beach or pool outfit with a wide-brim hat, an oversized beach bag, and stylish flip-flops to complete your look.

Off-the-Beach Looks – Modest but Glamorous!

Whether you’re heading to a beachside café or an evening Iftar, dressing modestly doesn’t mean you have to compromise on fashion.

  • Daytime wear: Think flowing maxi dresses, linen sets, and relaxed-fit trousers with a cute top.
  • Evening & Iftar outfits: Elegant abayas, kaftans, or maxi skirts and dresses paired with statement jewellery.

Do’s and Don’ts During Ramadan

Here are a few essential tips we always share with friends and family when they visit:

Do:

  • Dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees in public places.
  • Show respect by being mindful of prayer times and the peaceful atmosphere of the month.

Don’t:

  • Eat, drink, or smoke in public—especially during daylight hours—out of respect for those who are fasting.
  • Engage in public displays of affection (PDA), as they are discouraged.

Final Thoughts: Embrace the Spirit of Ramadan

Dubai is an amazing place to visit at any time of the year, and Ramadan is no different. Just remember to dress thoughtfully as a way to show respect for the local culture and enjoy the city’s beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and special Iftar gatherings!
